Explore recoverable CO₂ and the costs of reaching a buyer.

This explorer estimates potential CO₂ recovery and commercial contribution using the inputs you provide. It separates material recovered, product qualified and quantity sold. It is a screening tool for a possible recovery route, not a plant design or verified customer price. Use customer-qualified quantities and quoted delivery costs for the proposed route; leave unknown prices and demand visibly unresolved.

Begin with a measured stream

Enter the available CO₂-rich stream, composition, operating hours and recovery assumption. State the reference temperature and pressure so volume and density are consistent. Use upgrading offgas measurements where available; do not substitute raw-biogas volume without the required process balance.

Match output with demand

Enter the fraction meeting specification and qualified customer demand. The model caps sold quantity to the available qualified product. Unsold quantity remains visible and may still require storage or disposal arrangements.

Set a clear price boundary

Specify whether the selling price is ex-works or delivered. Include the corresponding recovery, utilities, testing, storage and logistics costs. If you enter a netback already deducting certain costs, the explorer should not deduct them again.

Separate operations from investment

The initial result is contribution before capital, tax and financing. Add capital and project-life assumptions for a separate annualised comparison. A positive operating contribution does not automatically establish attractive investment returns.

Compare scenarios transparently

Save a baseline, quoted case and hypothetical case. Labels should identify the evidence basis. Change volume, utilisation, price and delivery cost to see which assumptions matter. No profit should appear until sufficient valid inputs are supplied.

Take a useful brief into the next discussion

Download your assumptions, units, results and exclusions for an engineer, technology provider or buyer. Shelby’s goal is to support informed screening and commercial discussions; the tool does not certify product quality, award support or confirm finance.

Unsold tonnes still need a destination

Physical recovery, customer-qualified product and buyer demand are separate limits. The annual funnel does not establish tanker loading capacity, storage or monthly nominations. Unqualified and unsold tonnes require handling, disposal or curtailment arrangements, with incremental costs where known. CO₂ recovered from raw-gas upgrading and process CO₂ formed during hydrogen reforming are distinct streams; carbon cannot be counted twice. Beverage sales are utilisation, not automatic durable removal or carbon-credit eligibility.

Frequently asked questions

Does the result represent profit?

The basic result is contribution before capital, tax and financing. Read the displayed boundary.

What if I do not know my stream composition?

Leave the estimate incomplete and identify sampling as the next step; do not replace it with an unsupported default.

Can I assume all recovered CO₂ sells?

No. Enter qualified yield and customer demand; the calculator reports unsold quantity.
