Explore a feedstock-to-energy balance.
Use a measured or clearly sourced yield to estimate gas and energy on a declared material basis. Keep wet tonnes, dry matter, volatile solids and reference gas conditions distinct. (Internal research locator: public evidence not yet verified) Collection and storage losses need separate evidence; a theoretical yield does not establish dependable material delivered to the plant.

Choose one yield basis
Select measured biogas per wet tonne or a volatile-solids methane yield. Enter the relevant methane fraction, operating realisation and heating-value basis; do not multiply methane fraction into a methane yield again.
Explore sensitivity
Change availability and realised yield separately. Show gross gas, recovered methane and useful/delivered energy with own-use and losses defined. Theoretical laboratory potential is not guaranteed production.
Reading the result responsibly
Gas yield depends on the actual material, its moisture and composition, and how the digester is operated. Laboratory tests such as biochemical methane potential provide a far better basis than generic factors. Use the calculator to compare scenarios and identify which inputs matter most, then replace example values with measured data before making decisions.
One resource, one yield basis, one methane allocation
Most early estimates start from annual tonnes, but that can conceal moisture, solids and duplicate yield deductions. Select a realised wet-tonne yield, realised VS-fed yield, or laboratory BMP with one justified full-scale factor. Allocate methane across direct heat, CHP, biomethane and reforming without exceeding the same inlet supply. Reference-state and source declarations are mandatory. Heat allocation is fuel energy, not useful customer heat; hydrogen is separated reaction potential, not contracted sales. Monthly supply, inventory, disposal and customer matching remain evidence gaps.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a generic yield for financing?
Use representative tests and a defensible operational yield for project appraisal; generic values are screening inputs.
What units does the feedstock calculator use?
It uses wet tonnes per year, dry matter as a percentage of wet mass, volatile solids as a percentage of dry matter, methane yield per kilogram of volatile solids and a declared heating value. Reference gas conditions must be stated.
Can I save my calculator results?
Yes. Use Save this result under the results. Signed-in users save straight to their account; otherwise the result is kept on your device and added to your profile when you create an account or sign in.
