Biomethane: renewable gas from locally available organic resources

Understand what the product is, where it fits and whether your resource or project could support it.

Add my Feedstock

Biomethane is a methane-rich gas produced by upgrading suitable biogas. It can serve as an alternative to fossil natural gas where end-use requirements and technical standards are met. For developers, the central commercial challenge is not simply how much methane the feedstock can produce, but whether a reliable supply, upgrading specification and viable buyer or network connection come together.

How biomethane is produced and used

An anaerobic digester or existing biogas source provides raw gas. Cleaning removes moisture and problematic trace compounds, and upgrading separates most carbon dioxide while retaining methane. The product must meet the quality, pressure, metering and delivery requirements of its intended customer or network. A CO₂ stream may be available for recovery, but its volume is not equivalent to commercially saleable, purified CO₂.

Who this pathway may be relevant to

Wastewater utilities; dairy and food processors; AD plant owners; renewable gas developers; industrial gas customers; network-connected projects.

What determines a credible opportunity?

Is feedstock available year-round? What is measured methane content? Where is the connection point or direct-use customer? What gas specification, certification and commercial agreement are required? Shelby helps structure this early evidence, compare alternatives and identify which specialist information is still missing. A preliminary result is a starting point for decisions, not an engineering warranty or offtake agreement.

Turn this product interest into a project pathway

Start with available resources, services or product demand. Shelby can capture the opportunity, produce an indicative assessment where a tested pathway exists, and help identify possible project participants. Buyer specification, logistics, regulatory requirements and engineering validation remain essential before a commercial commitment.

Frequently asked questions

What is biomethane used for?

Subject to specification, it may supply industrial heat, gas networks or suitable transport-fuel systems.

Can renewable gas certificates add value?

Potentially, if the project meets the relevant certification rules and contract requirements; certificate revenue is not guaranteed.

Is carbon dioxide recovery automatic?

No. Separation does not establish capture, purification, compression or saleable product quality.
