BioLNG: moving renewable methane beyond the gas network

Understand what the product is, where it fits and whether your resource or project could support it.

Add my Feedstock

BioLNG is liquefied biomethane. Liquefaction can make renewable methane suitable for certain storage, transport and fuel applications where a pipeline connection is unavailable or impractical. The opportunity depends on sufficient gas throughput, reliable liquefaction performance and a buyer able to receive and use a cryogenic product.

How biolng is produced and used

Suitable biogas is cleaned and upgraded to biomethane, then conditioned and cooled for liquefaction. Storage, loading, transport, delivery and boil-off management add material requirements to the project. BioLNG is an alternative destination for upgraded methane; its output must not be added to the entire biomethane output from the same gas allocation.

Who this pathway may be relevant to

Remote industry; heavy-transport fuel buyers; developers without network access; fleet operators; gas logistics providers.

What determines a credible opportunity?

Can the project sustain continuous throughput? Where is the customer? What are transport distance and storage needs? Are vehicle, fuel and safety specifications compatible? Shelby helps structure this early evidence, compare alternatives and identify which specialist information is still missing. A preliminary result is a starting point for decisions, not an engineering warranty or offtake agreement.

Turn this product interest into a project pathway

Start with available resources, services or product demand. Shelby can capture the opportunity, produce an indicative assessment where a tested pathway exists, and help identify possible project participants. Buyer specification, logistics, regulatory requirements and engineering validation remain essential before a commercial commitment.

Frequently asked questions

Is BioLNG the same as fossil LNG?

Both are liquefied methane-rich fuels, but BioLNG originates from eligible renewable biogenic sources and must meet applicable specifications.

Can the same biomethane volume be sold twice?

No. Gas directed to liquefaction is no longer simultaneously available for separate sale.

Does every biomethane project need liquefaction?

No. Direct local use, pipeline injection or other pathways may be more practical.
