Connect production with a practical delivery route.
Infrastructure connects resource, processing and customer. A nearby pipeline is one option, not proof of an affordable connection. Assess direct use, network injection and off-grid delivery alongside electricity, water, access, storage and product-handling requirements. [[ Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), Malabar Biomethane Injection Project ](https://arena.gov.au/projects/malabar-biomethane-injection-project/), [ Australian Energy Regulator, AER, Gas pipeline regulatory determination role ](https://www.aer.gov.au/gas-pipeline-regulatory-determination-role); Shelby screening guidance] Connection distance, road access and the customer’s demand profile determine which delivery configuration warrants a detailed site assessment.

Begin with the complete site
Identify feedstock reception, utilities, processing, gas handling and co-product logistics. Existing sites may have useful assets but limited spare capacity. Confirm the available service rather than treating current infrastructure as free or unconstrained.
Choose the delivery configuration
Local heat or power can suit an on-site demand. Direct gas supply requires a compatible customer and appropriate infrastructure. Network injection requires gas acceptance and a connection arrangement. Road delivery introduces processing, storage and fleet requirements. Compare each at the same customer service and delivery boundary.
Test capacity throughout the year
Production and local demand do not necessarily peak together. Ask how the network or customer receives output during low-demand periods and interruptions. Compression, storage or a different route may be required. No configuration should assume unlimited acceptance.
Develop shared assets with clear rules
Shared infrastructure can help a regional cluster where credible participants justify capacity. Agree ownership, access, quality, contributions, operating costs and interruption management before investment. Shelby supports testing fair cost-sharing and later-user arrangements; these are recommendations, not a statement that every network currently offers reimbursement.
Learn from real interfaces
Malabar’s project record provides an Australian example of linking a host wastewater facility, upgrading equipment and distribution network. Denmark’s documented experience includes reverse-flow integration as production expands. Their configurations illustrate questions to assess, not standard Australian costs or delivery timeframes. Get an early delivery brief
Provide location, proposed product, flow profile, quality, customer needs and project stage. Request a capacity assessment, requirements and indicative costs before committing to detailed design.
Build a delivery brief before selecting a connection
A nearby pipe can look like a ready customer. The missing question is whether it can accept the quantity, pressure and quality when the plant needs to deliver. Compare each configuration against hourly and seasonal demand.
| Delivery option | First evidence needed | Cost and responsibility boundary |
|---|---|---|
| On-site use | Existing fuel demand, equipment compatibility and displaced service | Treatment, site piping and backup supply |
| Dedicated nearby supply | Named buyer load and route / easement feasibility | Pipe ownership, metering and customer interface |
| Network injection | Operator study, gas specification and seasonal capacity | Connection price, compression, quality monitoring and curtailment |
| Compressed / liquefied road delivery | Qualified product, fleet route, loading and customer storage | Conditioning, transport, unloading and safety duties |
| Shared regional gas / CO₂ assets | Aggregated independent supply and customers | Ownership, reserved capacity, access rules and staged funding |
Supply the operator or specialist with flow profiles, pressure, gas analysis, meter requirements, water and power availability, land and easements, safety constraints, expected outages and the intended delivery term. Record which party designs, pays for, owns, operates and maintains every interface. Obtain an actual connection scope instead of assigning one generic cost to all sites.
Shelby's first-mover cost-sharing and staged shared-infrastructure funding are policy recommendations. A proposed cluster is not an approved asset or a committed connection. Stop or revise the configuration if operator capacity or customer evidence cannot support delivery.
Frequently asked questions
Does being close to a gas main guarantee connection?
No. Capacity, quality, pressure, route, ownership and commercial arrangements still need assessment.
Must a project connect to the grid?
No. Compare useful direct use and other lawful delivery routes where appropriate.
Can infrastructure be shared?
Potentially, with credible participants, engineering assessment and clear cost/access responsibilities.
