Could your farm's energy bills or organic waste become an opportunity?

Some farms can reduce energy costs or recover useful energy from collected manure, effluent and other suitable material. Whether this makes financial sense depends on what can actually be collected, its quality, farm energy use, nearby customers and operating costs. Start with your operation and the problem you want to solve.

Three things to check before choosing equipment

Your starting evidence

Farm type (dairy / piggery / poultry / feedlot / cropping / mixed / other), primary challenge, state/region. Advanced: actual collectible tonnes/year, seasonal variability, on-site heat/power demand, current waste management, water/land constraints.

Useful demand and delivery

Describe actual on-site use or customer requirements, timing and practical transport or connection constraints.

Qualified site review

Confirm equipment suitability, regulatory obligations and the full cost boundary before investing.

The opportunity is in the whole operation

A big farm doesn't automatically need a digester. The first question is how much suitable material is collected reliably, and whether it has a useful nearby outlet. A shared project with neighbours or processors may deserve a look, but transport and permits matter.

Information to bring to your first review

Use recent bills, measured volumes with units and reference periods, site operating schedules, existing contracts and evidence of quality. Leave unknowns explicit. No equipment output or revenue is inferred from business size.

Frequently asked questions

Can cow manure power a farm?

It can under suitable collection, feedstock and technology conditions; output requires site-specific assessment.

Is poultry litter suitable for every digester?

No; moisture, composition and pretreatment matter.

Do I need a customer?

Useful on-site energy demand or an appropriate export/offtake arrangement is essential to economics.
