Assess biomass as a reliable delivered resource.
Biomass includes biological materials from agriculture, forestry and suitable waste streams. Commercial use depends on the fraction that can be sustainably collected, prepared and delivered to the selected process. Specify what arrives at the plant
Record moisture, particle size, organic content, contaminants, seasonal supply and ownership. Received material should meet the selected equipment specification.
Account for existing uses
Residues may already support soil health, livestock or industrial energy. Include competing buyers and collection/storage costs. Select a route suited to the material rather than treating all biomass as digester feedstock.
Moisture, ash and storage
For solid biomass, moisture content drives usable energy: wet fuel spends part of its energy evaporating water. Ash content and composition affect slagging, fouling and maintenance in boilers. Storage needs attention too, because piles can degrade, lose energy and in some cases self-heat. A clear fuel specification, with sampling at delivery and price adjustments for moisture, gives both supplier and user a fair basis for trade.
From resource estimate to fuel specification
Translate a regional resource estimate into a delivered-fuel schedule. Set limits for moisture, particle size, ash, contamination and sustainable origin, then test storage losses and wet-season access. Compare the value already earned by the material with collection, preparation and transport costs. The combustion or conversion supplier should confirm emissions controls and performance across the declared fuel envelope, not only at a preferred test condition.
Frequently asked questions
Are national biomass estimates project feedstock?
They guide investigation. Project supply requires local characterisation, collection economics and agreements.
What affects the value of biomass as a fuel?
Moisture, ash, particle size, contaminants and consistency all affect handling, efficiency and emissions. A delivered fuel specification, agreed with the supplier and matched to the boiler or conversion unit, is more useful than a total tonnage estimate.
How far can biomass be transported economically?
It depends on bulk density, moisture and the value of the end product. Loose, wet residues lose value quickly with distance, while dried or densified material travels further. Test haulage costs for the actual catchment rather than assuming a standard radius.
