Develop biofuels around finished-product demand.
Biofuels are produced from biological resources through distinct conversion routes. An investable project needs a sustainable input and a finished fuel meeting customer and market requirements. Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), Bioenergy / Energy from waste; Shelby consultation response, Inputs for other renewable gas pathways (company position) Assess processing losses, fuel specifications and access to the intended distribution channel before treating resource volume as saleable fuel.

Work backwards from the buyer
Establish the fuel specification, eligible production route, quality assurance and delivery arrangement. An intermediate oil or gas may need further processing before it can be sold into the intended market.
Assess competing resource use
Oils, fats and other inputs may already serve food, feed or other fuel markets. Compare resource costs, sustainability and customer value across the intended production chain.
Drop-in fuels and fuel standards
Renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel are often described as drop-in fuels because they can be used in existing engines and infrastructure within specified blend limits. Fuel must meet the relevant quality standard before sale, and aviation fuel faces particularly strict certification. Feedstock origin also matters, because buyers increasingly ask for sustainability certification and lifecycle emissions evidence. These requirements should shape the project before technology is selected.
Qualify the product and customer together
Confirm the applicable fuel specification, blending limit, chain-of-custody requirement and customer acceptance test before committing to a production route. Trace feedstock eligibility and competing uses, then include upgrading, storage, certification and delivery in the project boundary. An indicative product value is not an offtake agreement; model volume, quality remedies, indexation and delivery obligations explicitly.
Frequently asked questions
Is bioLPG produced only from biomethane?
No. Feedstock and conversion routes differ; assess the actual process and finished-product evidence.
What fuel standards apply to biofuels in Australia?
Transport biofuels and blends must meet the relevant national fuel quality standards, and buyers often apply their own specifications. Check the current standard for the intended fuel and blend before modelling sales, as off-specification product may have no market.
Can a resource estimate be treated as biofuel supply?
No. Conversion losses, competing uses, collection limits and sustainability requirements reduce the usable volume. Only contracted, tested feedstock processed through a defined route can support a saleable fuel estimate.
