Use bioenergy terms with clear meaning.
Bioenergy discussions are clearer when resource, process, product and performance measure are kept distinct. These definitions support technology, commercial and policy comparisons. Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), Bioenergy / Energy from waste; US Environmental Protection Agency, How Does Anaerobic Digestion Work? Use consistent units and distinguish theoretical potential, recoverable material, plant output and delivered product before comparing project claims.

Follow the value chain
Biomass is material; anaerobic digestion is a process; biogas is a mixture; biomethane is methane-rich gas meeting the relevant specification. Co-products have separate uses and quality requirements.
Interpret commercial metrics
Capacity describes capability; output records production over a period. Netback depends on the defined cost and delivery boundary. Renewable origin, lifecycle emissions and permanent removal are distinct claims.
Common confusions
Biogas is the raw mixture from digestion, mostly methane and carbon dioxide. Biomethane is biogas upgraded to near-pure methane, suitable for gas networks. Renewable gas is a broader term that can also include hydrogen. Digestate is the material remaining after digestion. Keeping these terms precise avoids overstating what a plant produces or where its output can be used.
Frequently asked questions
Can capacity and output be compared directly?
Only with compatible periods, units and operating assumptions; they normally describe different things.
What is the difference between biogas and biomethane?
Biogas is the raw gas from digestion, typically a mix of methane and CO₂ with impurities. Biomethane is biogas upgraded to high methane purity so it can replace natural gas in networks or vehicles.
What do HHV and LHV mean?
Higher heating value includes the energy recovered by condensing water vapour in combustion products; lower heating value does not. Always state which basis is used, because the difference is around ten per cent for methane.
