Denmark biogas roadmap: collective manure digestion and gas-grid biomethane
Denmark's 2012 support scheme and collective manure co-digestion drove rapid growth in grid biomethane, and most biogas output now passes through upgrading plants. Certificate sales abroad are not physical gas exports. For Australia, it highlights long-duration support, farm cooperation and network access working together.

Penetration and network integration
The Danish Energy Agency describes biogas as nearly 40% of gas-system supply in 2025. Energinet’s plan addresses reverse-flow needs and changing local supply/demand. Interpretation and reform lesson: High penetration shows physical integration is possible in an appropriate network, but the percentage is affected by declining gas consumption as well as production. What limits transfer to Australia: Not 40% of all Danish energy; no direct percentage target for Australia follows from this denominator. Questions for experienced operators: Obtain metered production, demand denominator, curtailment and network reinforcement outcomes.
Support architecture and duration
Legacy upgrading support has multiple components, including inflation and gas-price adjustments, plus a degressive component. New access to the legacy scheme closed in 2020; plant-vintage grandfathering matters. Interpretation and reform lesson: Predictable support and commodity-price adjustment can coexist; closed legacy support cannot be presented as an open offer to new entrants. What limits transfer to Australia: Term and cap depend on individual approval. NCV/GCV and gas-price reference must be retained. Questions for experienced operators: Request actual grant decisions, supported volume caps, indexation and expiry/transition clauses.
Overcompensation and reform
An assessment of 2020–22 overcompensation led to a DKK3.8/GJ support reduction from March 2024 to February 2027. Energy-crop restrictions also tightened, including maize ineligibility from August 2025. Interpretation and reform lesson: Observed correction illustrates why net-revenue monitoring matters. It does not prove all earlier projects were overpaid by the same amount. What limits transfer to Australia: Do not convert the Danish correction into an Australian tariff; feedstock restrictions use their own definitions. Questions for experienced operators: Validate realised revenue before/after correction, contract exposure and feedstock substitution costs.
Agricultural/feedstock model
Danish rules favour a constrained crop input mix alongside manure and residues, with a 4% wet-mass crop limit in 2024–25 and later maize restriction. Farm collection and nutrient return form important system interfaces. Interpretation and reform lesson: Inference: concentrated collectable manure can support aggregation; nutrient handling and logistics must be included in project economics. What limits transfer to Australia: Extensive Australian grazing makes national herd counts an unreliable proxy for Danish-style collectible manure. Questions for experienced operators: Provide collection radius, manure management counterfactual, nutrient return agreements and farm net benefit.
Frequently asked questions
Does Denmark have verified renewable-gas import and export data?
Biomethane certificates are traded abroad separately from physical gas. Parliamentary answer: nearly 20 PJ of GO sold in2023 and 87% sold abroad; no exact absolute export figure supplied. Physical renewable-origin cross-border split not extracted; null is not zero. National BioH2 output unavailable.
Is there a national BioCO₂ or BioH₂ production figure for Denmark?
IEA Bioenergy documents food-grade CO2 recovery at Korskro. This is project evidence for recovery and customer qualification, not a national tonnage series. IEA Bioenergy, Korskro food-grade CO2 case study Power-to-gas integration can use hydrogen as an input. That is different from producing BioH2 from biogenic material. No national annual BioH2 output series was verified.
What are the limits of the Denmark roadmap evidence?
No separately verified national annual gross physical biomethane import/export series in this release. National annual recovered BioCO2 and bio-derived hydrogen totals were not established.
