United Kingdom biomethane roadmap: GB support schemes vs UK statistics
National grid-injection output is measured separately from the Great Britain support schemes and the GGCS certificate registry. RHI created the early tariff pathway; GGSS supports later deployment.

RHI history
The non-domestic RHI closed to new applicants in March 2021, with legacy payments generally for 20 years. Ofgem reports about 360 million m³ of supported biomethane injection in 2021–22. Interpretation and reform lesson: Observed operating output under a legacy scheme; separate this from subsequent GGSS deployment and from total national gas. What limits transfer to Australia: Volume cannot be converted to energy without documented calorific conditions. Treasury-funded RHI differs from levy-funded GGSS. Questions for experienced operators: Compare realised RHI project cash flows and feedstock changes with initial forecasts.
GGSS tariff, duration and funding
GGSS pays eligible AD biomethane injection, funded by the Green Gas Levy on gas suppliers. Standard support is 15 years, with a final payment boundary relevant to late commissioning. Tiered rates, annual CPI adjustments, degression and application budgets control support. Ofgem’s 2026–27 schedule lists 7.09, 4.40 and 4.12 p/kWh for the three marginal tiers for tariff starts on/after 1 October 2024 [, spreadsheet range A14:C16]. Interpretation and reform lesson: Long-lived operating support can provide predictable revenue; entry and commissioning conditions still matter. Supplier levy costs can be passed to gas customers. What limits transfer to Australia: Do not quote October 2025 tariff as the 2026 tariff; use Ofgem’s cohort table. Announced commissioning extension must be checked against operative regulations. Questions for experienced operators: Validate tariff guarantee, actual accreditation, quarterly eligible output and payment deductions.
Feedstock, certification and injection
GGSS eligibility distinguishes waste/residue energy from other inputs; the waste/residue share test is energy-based, not the wet-mass limits used elsewhere. Network injection and sustainability records are required; voluntary origin certificates do not replace scheme compliance. Interpretation and reform lesson: Clear eligibility and measurement support auditability, but procurement of qualifying feedstock can constrain scale. What limits transfer to Australia: GB scheme is not all UK jurisdictions; customer Scope 1 claims in Australia depend on Australian rules. Questions for experienced operators: Provide sampling methodology, energy allocation by input, gas losses and network-quality adjustments.
Outcomes and budget constraints
Ofgem’s SY5 report records 13 registered producers and cumulative eligible injection of 649 GWh by March 2026. The 14 September snapshot has 14 registered participants, 37 tariff guarantees and 16 applications in the budget queue. Interpretation and reform lesson: Observed delivery and a growing pipeline coexist with budget constraints. Applications include reapplications; do not calculate a success rate by dividing registrations by all applications. What limits transfer to Australia: Cumulative scheme output is not annual market output. Queue estimates change weekly and do not guarantee funding. Questions for experienced operators: Ask which real projects were delayed by budget entry, planning, grid or feedstock separately.
Digestate and reform lesson
England’s anaerobic digestate resource framework sets conditions for end-of-waste, alongside PAS 110. Quality, eligible inputs and intended uses remain material. Interpretation and reform lesson: Conditional product pathways provide a useful reference; certification is a control process, not proof of a profitable fertiliser market. What limits transfer to Australia: England rules should not be attributed to every UK nation or imported unchanged to Australian soils. Questions for experienced operators: Validate batch rejection, traceability, nutrient advice and actual customer purchases.
Frequently asked questions
Does United Kingdom have verified renewable-gas import and export data?
GGCS transfers to foreign registries are certificate exports, not physical gas exports. Its transport cancellation series is not total RTFO biomethane supply. Keep national production, Great Britain GGSS participation, and voluntary registry membership separate.
Is there a national BioCO₂ or BioH₂ production figure for United Kingdom?
Assess recovered BioCO2 and carbon capture separately from a biomethane plant’s injection volume. No consistent national recovered BioCO2 tonnage series was established. DESNZ publishes Hydrogen BECCS programme projects and the H2Boost final report. These support a demonstration roadmap, not a national commercial production curve. DESNZ, Hydrogen BECCS phase 2 projects DESNZ, H2Boost final project report
What are the limits of the United Kingdom roadmap evidence?
No separately verified national annual gross physical biomethane import/export series in this release. National annual recovered BioCO2 and bio-derived hydrogen totals were not established. GB support scheme geography differs from UK-wide DUKES statistics. GGCS memberships are registry coverage, not a national census.
